When weak growth wasn't the whole story.
The question
The business looked weak overall. Was the whole business deteriorating—or were the headline numbers hiding something else?
The underlying business was moving in different directions.
Customer activity and parts of the business were weakening while a stronger, higher-value area was improving.
The headline numbers said one thing. The business underneath said another.
One improving part of the business was masking weakness elsewhere.
The evidence changed what needed attention first.
Instead of treating the business as one problem, the next priorities became more focused.
